There's a Quiet Wave in Indo That's Perfect For You and a Surf Coach

Around a year ago, the legends at Indo Surf Crew crossed paths with the owner of an off-the-grid eco lodge located in the middle of nowhere in one of more isolated parts of Indonesia.

Here the crew found a literal slice of heaven with a perfectly peeling right-hander situated straight out front. The owner (whose identity will remain confidential) had been exploring the area and its coastline for nearly 20-years, which makes him the ultimate guide to this part of everyone's favourite archipelago.

While there, he welcomed the team onto his boat and gave a tour of the local waves - a variety of premium quality pointbreaks facing different directions that could be surfed all year long, no matter the size of the swell or whether you’re a beginner, pro or big wave charger. Better yet, this host allowed Indo Surf Crew to view his quiver of specialty made guns. All of which hailed from the Gerry Lopez era and were casually stored in the common area of the lodge. As a way of indicating how long it had been since these magical boards were last ridden, he gestured to the generously sized mounds of gecko poo that had accumulated on top of them.

Overlooking the ocean from atop a cliff, the scenery at the lodge is mind-blowing. But the thing that keeps everyone’s eyes firmly fixed on a single area are the waves. More specifically, the punchy right-hander out front that wraps around a craggy cliff. It’s infinitely more fun up close than from that perch up high though. There’s a barrel section (or two) and it's hollow with an almond shape that’s great for practicing more critical turns and carves. When the tide gets a little higher, it transforms into the ideal wave for an intermediate surfer, with long walls that are perfectly suited to a twinny.

This wave is addictive for natural footers, but it’ll still excite the goofys, too. There’s also an array of other empty waves around the corner for when right foot forward surfers would like to test their forehand. Of course, if you’re travelling all the way to the land of world class left-handers, you’re bound to find some. So it goes without saying that this area also has some fantastic lefts on offer.

It is the ideal playground for a surf coaching retreat. And, if you make it there with Indo Surf Crew, their surf coach Rodrigo Machado will be filming each of your rides, to later analyse your performance via video coaching sessions. He’s also developed an innovative surf training method called Power Surf, which is inspired by the movements of Ginastica Natural that was itself inspired by Capoeira and Martial Arts. Essentially, Rodrigo is able to choreograph the movements of surfing on land to better help you perform surfing manoeuvres with a unique flow and power.

One of the first Power Surf poses you can expect to learn is called the Monkey position. This move, which refers to the pop up action, is key to ensuring you progress quickly onto your next manoeuvre. You’ll often hear Rodrigo telling his students to always remember their Monkey position. This isn’t your queue to start eating a banana.

Rodrigo breaks down every surf movement in an easy-to-understand yet technical way. Before long, you’ll be totally aware of your body’s positioning and muscle memory, thanks to the way Rodrigo makes you practice and repeat these actions.

Last but not least, Rodrigo uses SmoothStar surf trainers made with a flexible truck on the nose that emulates the feeling of a board on a wave, thereby providing a sensation similar to surfing. Through a step by step course, a new body awareness will be unlocked allowing you to learn the mechanics behind advanced surf manoeuvres. After four successful surf coaching retreats this year, Rodrigo’s Power Surf technique combined with therapeutic yoga and breathing techniques has proven to completely transform the way our guests surf for the better.

For Indo Surf Crew, sustainability is at the very core of their retreats. They're conscious of how surf trips and the materials used have an impact on the environment we all love. Even the Kayu timber surfboards are eco-friendly, with balsa blanks made from biodegradable materials that are ethically sourced from small scale plantations in West Java. Unlike many PU or epoxy boards, they’re also built to last a lifetime.

It's just one factor that Indo Surf Crew believe in and trust that all surfers will leave a smaller footprint on the environment, as well as learn more about just how critically endangered our oceans really are. These are just a couple of reasons why they organise surf coaching retreats to destinations that act responsibly towards the environment. Life and surfing should be all about “Giving back to nature as much as we receive”, after all.
