Remember a while back, we were looking at the whole souther hemisphere coming alive; the South Pacific and the south Atlantic? The South Pacific eventually burped up Code Red II, which is still going FYI. And the Atlantic created some gold for Jbay, before whipping all the way into West Aus and eventually, the Indo fun land. And that's where this story picks up. Nick Carroll reports.

It was definitely better than it’d looked.

The Indonesian chain’s had a lot of slightly west-angled swells this year. The one that landed so impeccably on the reefs and shorelines of the chain this weekend was way more from the south — a much nicer angle for the centre of the chain.

Thus Bali really had a time of it. And those gentler tradewinds meant photographer Federico Vanno was able to score the double: Keramas in the morning, and Padang in the afternoon. “Keramas, it was on fire,” said Fede, and it does kind of look that way.

Here’s a selection of images from the weekend that was.

Rio Waida, and a nice morning welcome home after his brilliant Challenger tour forays. Says the photographer: “The night before I talked to Rio and after checking the forecast, we decided to try to go to Keramas for sunrise. Most of the time during the dry season when the tradewind starts to blow it’s very difficult to get offshore wind in Keramas but there was a small chance that we would score.”

Barrel time! Jasmine Studer, being careful to evade the onlookers. “It is nice to see new female groms growing on the island of Bali and Jasmine is often present to surf this wave.”

You’ve got to be happy on mornings like this. “It was nice to be out there and see the guys catch the best waves of the set without fighting to catch the best, in the water there was harmony for the few surfers and a high frequency for the many waves that came.” Tonjo Darmaputra, feeling it…

“I arrived in darkness but with the almost full moon as a companion which illuminated the Keramas beach. You could see the waves breaking well. In the meantime, I started putting my camera in my Liquid Eye water housing and shortly after, as the sun was about to rise, Rio arrived and immediately we entered the water to catch some waves. Soon Tonjo and Nyoman “Blacky” Satria also got to enjoy a fun and uncrowded morning.”
