There's been no end to flawless images out of everyone's favourite wave-drenched archipelago over the past six weeks or so. Indo's having its post-lockdown resurgence, and with the gates open, a whole smorgasbord of surfers are descending on those crisp, punchy shores.

Already, a couple of moments have been stand out. Maya Gabeira's HTs bomb, Charly Quivront surfed the best wave of the season so far (we think). And with a swell drenching like it has been, there's always an unknown surfer who steps into the fold and dazzles with some feat. The past few weeks, it's been 23-year-old Laura Coviella, who actually kicked off our Indo coverage with an incredible Bank Vaults drainer (that's the cover shot above, FYI)

Forecast: Indo

“The only thing I can say right now is that; I just want more and more,” Laura tells MSW when asked about that wave and how heavy it was.

Laura was born in Tenerife, which the largest of Spain's Canary Islands and home to stretches of black sand-beaches and volcanic reefs. It's only a short flight away from El Quemao, aka, European Pipeline. Named for good reason.

“I was 12-years-old when I took off at home on my first wave,” Laura said. “But I really started to surf more consistently when I was almost 16 then, I decided I wanted to compete internationally, which happened when I turned 18. So, yeah, I guess I started quite late compared with the surfers I’m surrounded by.

It's not all sunshine though, gotta pay to play especially when a swell hits Indo.

“Fortunately, I have lot of good waves at home and, for sure, is one of the places I like to surf the most. However, there are more places that have a bit of my heart too, I’m lucky that I have been able to surf a lot of really sick waves around the world; Mexico, the Mentawais most recently and El Salvador. I find it impossible to say only one place [laughs], but for sure warm places... I hate the cold so bad.”

Most recently, Laura's been pushing into the big wave realm, hoping to carve more of a niche for herself and take the mantle forward for female surfing when waves start to get into the dizzying realms.

“I mean, sure, I love big waves, the adrenaline, the barrels... but also, if you sent me a perfect, rippable small wave – then I'm the most happy girl on Earth [laughs].

Oooft, how's that for a turn?

“I've spent a bit of time in Indo before, but weirdly, wasn't super lucky with the waves at the time. This trip's different though, my first time in the Ments but for sure not the last one.”

And Laura's goals? “I've got some big projects in mind, over the next few years – but I'd like to keep them just for me for the moment. Mostly around my performance and surfing bigger waves. I'm riding La Santa surfboards, anything from a 5'3” to a 9'4”, depending on the waves and they've really helped me hone in my surfing.”

Any hint of where Laura's setting her sights? “OK, well, Nazare, Safi, Pipeline, Fiji, proper Teahupoo... there's a lot of places still to discover.” We'll be sure to follow the name. And you can too, via Instagram, here. All images from Manu Miguelez.
