It's great to see Rest Bay being surfed with style. I liked the way this guy surfed so much I couldn't resist putting together a vid featuring some of his rides. It was a beautiful December day at Rest Bay - frosty, clear blue sky, sun sparkling off gassy deeply spaced 6' waves, 8' on sets, very mild onshores with an easy paddle out. By mid afternoon the tide dropped off the rocks, the sun sank into clouds on the horizon and mist descended across the beach. Then, AND ONLY THEN, did surfers finally venture into the water. So the big mystery was why virtualy no one was out ther scoring the best waves of the day earlier when the sun was out??!! Strange but true...

If you're judging size by this vid shot towards dusk, you'd be right, but I was referring to the wave size at it's peak earlier in the day. It had definitely dropped off by the time I got back at 3.30 and the tide was dropping. At midday it was significantly bigger than what you see in the vid here although difficult to judge exact size 'cos I couldn't see anyone out so had no surfers to act as a size reference. Anyway I didn't take the 6' to 8' on sets from the surf report, nor from being there myself earlier, but from a local who surfs Rest regular, has been surfing the spot many years, and was out surfing it on the day from maybe 1.30/2 ish so he probably got to catch it before it dropped off and the mist came in. He had scored some rides from the golf course to past the lifeguard building if that helps illustrate how well they had been breaking.

Im pretty sure its not Elliot, not his style. That guy rips on a longboard like its a shortboard at times but still maintains fluid and effortless nose riding, turns and drop knees at some of the other local breaks. Awesome to watch even when your in the water paddling out.....but fair play this video is pretty good too, guy flows well!I was in this day at other nearby breaks it was not a bad day at all it was just a tad messy here in the morning....hence i surfed elsewhere.Glad I had day off work too!!! Yeehaa

I'm sure you're right, at least for all locals of any ability, but lots of people surf Rest from as far away as Birmingham and London. I check out Rest daily, often several times, as I live next to it and it was really weird to see it empty yet going of that good... and it was really really good...I didn't film it earlier at its best 'cos I couldn't see anyone out at all. Somehow it felt at the same time somehow beautiful to witness it that good and totaly empty, yet at the same time a criminal waste of good waves if you know what I mean?

Thanks, though I'm only filming temporarily to keep myself from going insane while I'm out of the water recovering from Endless Injury! It's tricky having any discussion comparing how local breaks were working on this site 'cos no one wants to give away where they are referring to for obvious reasons. I only saw the place we both have in mind briefly on Weds before I got called away by an urgent phone call, but for the few seconds I was there I saw a guy drop down the face of a wave that literally dwarfed him. If I could've stayed I would've had some great footage! It's an easy place to vid 'cos the standard of surfing is much higher.

Looks like Elliot , and I think most of the locals would have scored better surf at one of the reefs/points that work well in the conditions you described ealier and thats probably why it seemed like there wasn't anyone around .

I was at the main reef/point you're probably thinking of earlier in the day. It was working fairly well -nothing as big as the day before. Shot some good rides, but nothing fantastic I reckon Rest was working much better on Thurs am/midday and possibly the locals just didn't realise and the surf report stating Rest was for "Heroes only" put people off cos' plenty off people turned up and seeing no one in the water drove off - probably to Coney. In fact that sounds like a good strategy... once my arm heals I'll start posting surf reposts whenever it's good at Rest stating "Whooahh MASSIVE only for SERIOUS HEAD CASES planning a prolonged stay in intensive care!!" and then get the beach to myself :)
