Recently the European Association of Surfing Doctors held its first annual conference on Surfing Medicine on the South Cape of Europe, Sagres, Portugal, 8-10th June 2012.
Ninety “surfing doctors” (including specialized paramedics, and students) from seventeen different countries were united in the waves of the Algarve.
Topics such as the history of surfing medicine, skincancer among surfers, shoulder instability/cuff laesions, the surfer’s eye, head/neck injuries were presented, alongside presentations covering tropical infectious diseases, medical support in remote locations and the neurobiological drive that’s behind bigwave surfing.
In collaboration with the Academy of Wilderness Medicine Fellowship, a workshop; medical support of the injured surfer in remote locations, was part of the conference program.
The surfing doctors paddled out to celebrate this first founding conference with doctors/paramedics united by passion for surfing and medicine.
As one of the conference partners, Surfrider Foundation Europe gave a valuable insight on their projects. Furthermore the first European Champion of Surfing Doctors was crowned, a proud surfing doctor from Italy, dr Giovanni Pallatella.
