Break out your bonzers, quicken your quads, throw down your thrusters, tune up your twinnies and soul arch your single fins. Saturday, September 28th 2013, Approaching Lines is bringing to the UK the first annual 5 to 1 Fin Fair, presented by Reef.
Hosted at Porthtowan Beach, Cornwall, this one-day surf competition and gathering of finned fanatics is a celebration of the art of surfing. It’s not about the set up of your stick, it’s all about panache and the way you cut a dash.
With an emphasis on good vibes, good rides and good times, the contest – open to guys, girls and groms - consists of five categories: single fin; 2 fin / twinnie / fish; Thruster or any 3 fin set-up; 4 fin set up / quad; 5 fin / Bonzer with a winner in each. Boards must be sub 9ft and watercraft will go though rigorous scrutineering to ensure no logs have slipped through the net.
The grand final will be held between the winners of each class, with the victor crowned the KING OF THE FINS. This event is all about style with judges looking for smooth expressive surfing, linking power with flow and stoke whilst balls out going for broke. Entry is open to all but places are limited and available on line on a first come, first served basis HERE.
Part competition, part social gathering, the 5-1 will also host to the next round of The Shaper’s Shield which will be awarded to the shaper whose board exhibits that something a little bit special – whether emerging backyard builders or established craftspeople, so some down, showcase your boards and pass on the stoke! Extra craft will be available to demo on the day and shapers on hand to talk you through the finer points of their art.
We’re hosting a pre-event shindig on Friday 27th September including a special screening of Compassing by Cyrus Sutton, courtesy of REEF. The screening will kick off at the Blue Bar, Porthtowan at 8pm. Tickets are limited so pre-registration is advised by emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org
